The Sheffield Wine Wagon
It was not made for candles.
This extraordinary early-19th-century Sheffield silver-plate wine wagon was designed to carry bottles of port or sherry around the dining table. Two removable wine coasters rest upon an ingenious wheeled chassis, complete with spoked wheels, a turning front assembly and a wonderfully improbable little handle.
In its first life, it would have made its way around an English dining table after dinner, carrying the wine from one guest to the next.
Some two hundred years later, we found it.
The wagon retains the scratches, tarnish, plating wear and other evidence of a very long life. Its beaded rims, tiny wheels and beautifully engineered chassis are precisely what made us fall for it.
And while we have a habit of turning wonderful old silver into candles, occasionally we find something that requires absolutely nothing from us.
This is one of those things.
